Thoughts from Thoreau

“It is never too late to give up your prejudices.”
~Henry David Thoreau
I love Henry David. As a matter of fact, I am planning to read _ Walden_ at the Lake when I go up there for vacation in less than one week{ wh00t}
The world without prejudice would be a nicer world , indeed.  It is sad to say, but even in the 21st century our culture still accepts ” isms”.  Maybe the isms are not * quite* as blatant as they have been in times past but  the thoughts & actions are still part of our society.
There is still patriarchy & racism.   It is ok, in our youth-obsessed  culture, to discount someone’s job performance just because she or he isn’t 25 & ageism  runs amok  in job searching. This is sad…since when were folks over ” a certain age ” seen as less-valuable than younger workers?
And there is the proverbial elephant in the room: homosexuality? As a straight American with several GLBT friends, I proudly support rights for ALL persons.  Equality does not know any race, gender, creed or sexual orientation.  Until we rid  ourselves of prejudice, equality will remain a lofty goal. I’m 34 years old & I can only hope & pray that I’ll live long enough to see a world with equality
