Booze on Sundays….

Today’s Gospel lesson reminds me of a silly rule that I happened upon when I moved to the Deep Souh. Apparently some stores won’t sell alcoholic beverages on Sunday mornings.

Yep, you read that correctly. You cannot buy even beer or wine in some places in the Deep South on Sunday mornings before noon.

Really? REALLY?

Tell me, what purpose does this law serve? We Anglicans consider wine to be among the two elements necessary for our Holy Sacrament. And anyhow, Prohibition did not work.

Some rules are made by people merely for the sake of making rules.

Sarah, believe it or not, there are entire counties in Alabama today that do not allow the sale of alcohol at any time. The county where Janet’s sister lives just went “wet” in the past couple of years. It was a mighty battle between the Baptist and bootleggers on one side and the Episcoplians and some business leaders on the other. Janet’s sister was very outspoken in favor and got a lot of hate mail via the internet. In the end, justice prevailed!
